Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Romantic films, often celebrated for their portrayal of idealized relationships, have a profound influence on the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of their audiences, particularly adolescents. In Damaturu Local Government Area of Yobe State, a significant portion of the adolescent population engages with romantic films, consuming narratives that often emphasize love, relationships, and emotional connections. These films typically depict love in an exaggerated manner, creating a sense of what the "perfect relationship" should look like. Such depictions can deeply influence how adolescents perceive romance and affect their dating behaviors. Romantic films, often viewed as an entertaining escape, can shape adolescents' expectations about relationships, including ideas around love, attraction, gender roles, and the ways in which one should behave within a relationship (Akinmoladun & Adedeji, 2023). The growing accessibility of digital platforms further amplifies the consumption of these films among young people. However, the question remains as to what extent these portrayals in romantic films are shaping the real-life dating behaviors of adolescents in Damaturu. This study aims to explore how romantic films influence the dating behaviors of adolescents, assessing whether these films lead to idealized notions of romance, increase dating expectations, or possibly encourage unrealistic perceptions of relationships among young viewers.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While romantic films are a popular genre among adolescents, there is limited research on how these films influence dating behaviors, particularly in the context of Nigerian adolescents. In Damaturu, the prevalence of romantic films among young viewers has grown with the increasing availability of digital media, but the influence of these films on adolescents' real-life relationship choices remains under-explored. Romantic films often present unrealistic portrayals of love, which could result in adolescents adopting unrealistic expectations in their own dating lives. For instance, these films may suggest that love should be effortless, idealized, or overly dramatic, potentially leading adolescents to become disillusioned when real-life relationships do not meet these standards. Furthermore, romantic films often present stereotypical gender roles, which may reinforce traditional ideas of masculinity and femininity, potentially influencing adolescents’ dating dynamics and behaviors. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the influence of romantic films on dating behaviors in Damaturu, assessing whether these films shape adolescents' expectations of romantic relationships and their dating habits.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is important because it explores the role of romantic films in shaping the dating behaviors of adolescents, a topic that is highly relevant in the context of contemporary media consumption in Nigeria. The findings of this research will contribute to understanding the impact of popular media on youth behavior, particularly in the realm of romantic relationships. By focusing on Damaturu, the study will provide localized insights into how adolescents in this area interact with media and form their ideas about romance. Moreover, the research will be valuable for educators, counselors, and parents, as it can inform strategies to address potentially harmful influences from media consumption. It will also contribute to media creators and stakeholders by highlighting the effects of their content on the youth demographic and offering suggestions for responsible filmmaking.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on adolescents in Damaturu Local Government Area, Yobe State, and their consumption of romantic films. It will examine how these films influence their perceptions of love, relationships, and dating behaviors. The study is limited to this specific geographical area and will not consider other genres of films or media forms. A limitation of the study could be the challenge of isolating the influence of romantic films from other factors that may also affect adolescent behavior, such as peer influence or family background.
